Rockland Youth Orchestra Season Five Begins March 9th NANUET, N.Y. -- There is still time to sign up for Season Five of Rockland Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals begin March 9th at 7 pm at Highview Elementary School in Nanuet. RYO is an extra-curricular opportunity for young musicians to bolster instrumental school curricula with orchestral experience. RYO students need to be playing at a minimum of Level III at the previous year's NYSSMA festival. Co-founder Matt Rotjan points out that not every student will land a coveted position in All-County, and RYO gives students a way to experience that kind of collaboration. "RYO is still figuring out…

Middle School Principal David Johnson and Joe Fusaro presented a proposal to the board to start the Mac Lab in the middle school in 2017.  "There's no reason students have to wait until high school to have this experience," said Johnson. Should Bikes Be Banned At Congers Lake Trail? Should Bikes Be Banned At Congers Lake Trail?
Should Bikes Be Banned At Congers Lake Trail? CONGERS, N.Y. -- Kelly Parker walks the 2.6-mile trail that hugs Congers Lake every day. But the West Nyack resident has no problem with bikers. "I can't see why they shouldn't be allowed to ride," she said, during her daily constitutional Monday on Congers Lake Memorial Park trailway. Others have a different point of view. Another walker said "it's too tight for bikes. Someone's going to get hurt." And a couple jogging by were at odds. She said leave the bikers alone. He said ban them. This difference of opinion was a point of discussion during last Tuesday's Clarkst…
Feb. 29th Wedding Anniversary Special This Leap Year Feb. 29th Wedding Anniversary Special This Leap Year
Feb. 29th Wedding Anniversary Special This Leap Year NANUET, N.Y. --  We have a leap year, where an extra day is added to the end of February every four years, because of the solar system's disparity with the Gregorian calendar. Disparity, is something Steve and Laura Zarro, get. In 2004, on February 29th, the couple married. "We chose this day because all our lives, my wife and I had been two people who both had gone against the grain whenever possible." Getting back to science, a complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So leap seconds - and leap…

North Rockland Full Day K Group Takes Fight To Albany STONY POINT, N.Y. -- Jen Teichmann, a kindergarten teacher, and the mother of four young children, is adamant about one thing: full day kindergarten should not be viewed as an option. Because Teichmann lives in Stony Point, which has a financially-stressed school district, she is taking the fight to Albany. On Monday, Teichmann, the advocacy leader of the North Rockland Full Day Advocacy Group, www.facebook.com/groups/NRFullDayK, along with a group of 30, are meeting with Albany officials in both the senate and assembly education committees throughout the day. “Kindergarten is a core instru…

Lean In, Says Valerie Moldow, Clarkstown's Newest Councilwoman CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. – It’s all about leaning in. “Women need more exposure and to be more empowered,” said Valerie Moldow, a Nanuet real estate agent and Clarkstown’s newest council member, in a recent sit-down interview at Clarkstown Town Hall. Moldow, 55, filled the position vacated by town Supervisor George Hoehmann. Politics for Moldow, a mother of three, makes sense. “When I was approached about the vacancy, at first I said “Are you kidding. Me?” But Moldow,, a native Rocklander, a real estate broker at Keller Williams and long-time volunteer for organizations like Meals On Wheels and K…
Suffern Shoe Repair Shop Will Keep Vintage Sign Suffern Shoe Repair Shop Will Keep Vintage Sign
Suffern Shoe Repair Shop Will Keep Vintage Sign SUFFERN, N.Y. --  The neon sign in the window of Rocco's Shoe Repairing on Lafayette Avenue has been there for 65 years. It appears it will remain a village fixture, despite a recent visit by a code enforcement officer who said the sign violated the code. In September 2015, village officials undertook an initiative to enforce a building code that requires store windows to have no less than 10% coverage. Too many windows were being plastered with posters or signs, which was both an obstruction for law enforcement and a blight on the aesthetics of the street.  The initiative came from the Suf…

Francos In Nanuet Is Awarded DVlicious Certificate For Best Pizza NANUET, N.Y. -- It's not easy to grab Frank Pulitano's attention at 6:30 pm on a rainy night. One minute he's busy on the phone taking orders; next he's checking on the pizza in the ovens at Francos, which was voted best pizza in Daily Voice's DVlicious contest. Francos is on Route 59 in the Thruway Plaza shopping center. Finally, when handed a framed award, Pulitano smiles and says "It's really good that everyone likes the pizza." But Pulitano is a modest man, one who even needed a little nudge to have his picture taken. Pulitano was eager to get back to the ovens but he did say …
