The woman, who has been identified as 54-year-old Eva Linda Najera-Gomez, who is survived by a 13-year-old daughter, was found by police about 1:40 a.m., when officers responded to a call regarding a body on the ground in the area of 43 Commerce Street, said Officer Matthew Galli.

Officers found Najera-Gomez on the ground, unresponsive. Further investigation showed that she was hit by a vehicle which fled the scene of the accident, Galli said.

She was pronounced dead a short time after the officer’s arrival.

Police believe she may have been hit by a silver or gray couple, Galli said.

"The operator of the vehicle may be unaware that they struck someone," he said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident come forward. Information will be kept confidential and can be given anonymously. To provide information, contact Det. Eugene Suarez at 845-213-8656 or Det. Sgt. Lopez at 845-721-9561.
