Police Investigate Possible ATM 'Skimmer' Use In Nyack

ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- Orangetown police said they are investigating the possible use of a “skimmer” device on an ATM in Nyack.

ATM skimming alone is responsible for $350,000 of fraud daily. A recent report of skimming at the Sterling National Bank on North Highland Avenue has police asking customers to check their bank statements and report it to the Orangetown Police.

According to police, the incident occurred at Sterling National Bank on North Highland Avenue.

Police are asking residents to contact them at 845-359-3700 if they have used an ATM in the village of Nyack and found unauthorized charges on their account.

The department, which helps cover crime in Nyack, said it is common this time of year for criminals to use skimmers and offer the following tips:

Look out for unusual ATM signage. No financial institution would require you to “swipe your card here before inserting it in the card reader” or something to that effect.
If your card is not returned after the transaction or after pressing cancel, immediately contact the financial institution.
Check for anything that seems to have been placed over the keypad that moves, seems unusual or does not match the ATM. Oftentimes criminals use that instead of a camera to record your personal identification number.
Check your statements regularly to be sure there are no unusual withdrawals or suspicious activity.
