BLAUVELT, N.Y. -- Sister Catherine Jerome Farrington -- formerly Peggy Ann Farrington -- died on Sunday, March 20. She was 81.
Farrington had been a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt for the past 58 years. Sister "C.J." was born in the Bronx. She received a bachelor's in education from Dominican College, in Orangeburg. She devoted 34 years of her ministry to the care and education of the children of St. Dominic's Home in Blauvelt. She served as cottage mother for many years, first with the youngest girls and later with the older girls.
Farrington also served in other capacities at Saint Dominic's Home, including as a teacher's aide in St. Dominic's School. After her retirement from St. Dominic's Home, she provided support services for senior sisters residing at the motherhouse.
In addition to her religious congregation, she is survived by her nieces, Connie Jean Harmon and Kelly Christine McMahon, and the many alumnae of St. Dominic's Home. Farrington was predeceased by her parents, Christopher Farrington and Katherine Coffey, and her brother, Jerome Farrington.
A wake and evening prayer were held on Tuesday evening, March 22. A mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, at St. Dominic's Convent, 496 Western Highway, in Blauvelt. Burial will follow at Dominican Sisters' Cemetery. Hannemann Funeral Home, in Nyack, is assisting with arrangements.
