Mayor Jen Laird-White said the Nyack Window Project, which pairs visual artists with local landlords to create original installations in downtown storefront windows, was conceived by award-winning set designer and Nyack resident Joanne Howard.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, Dec. 11 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 8 North Broadway. The window displays will be on view from Dec. 11 through Jan. 31.
Laird-White praised the cooperative spirit of the project: “It is so wonderful to see everyone from landlords to artists to local business owners all working together to make our village a little brighter and fill our storefronts with holiday cheer.”
To make the project a success, Laird-White and Howard reached out to Nyack native Tony Oursler, an internationally-known multimedia artist whose work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA, Tate Modern, and many other museums and galleries. Oursler’s installation will be part of a group of windows at the Athene Insurance building on North Broadway.
Joining Oursler is Michael Zansky, whose work can be seen at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Kris Burns and Joanne Howard round out the quartet at Athene.
Also on North Broadway, Suzanna Frosch will be taking over the windows of 2 N. Broadway; Jane Cowles and Matthew James Smith are on view at Riverwaves Salon (4 N. Broadway).
On Main Street, look for Rodger Stevens’s snow flake sculpture (86 Main Street) and Johanna Goodman’s collages (116 Main Street). South Broadway welcomes Jamie Gaviola at Sanctuary (60 S. Broadway).
Last, but not least, artist Bill Batson will lead a group of children from the Nyack Center in a Dickens-themed installation at Lydecker Realty (143 Main Street).
