NORTH ROCKLAND, N.Y. -- It was an exciting time for members of the St. Gregory's 4th-grade basketball team of Garnerville as they dribbled and dunked their way to a state title on Sunday during the New York Catholic Youth Organizations (CYO) State Championship.

To make their way to the state championship, St.Gregory´s defeated St.Francis of West Nyack in the Rockland County Championship and then defeated St.Mary of Marlboro (Ulster County) and St.Mary of Fishkill to win the upstate CYO finals in regional competition, said CYO Coordinator Tom O'Grady.

St.Gregory´s finished the season with a final record of 24-0 and an undefeated 16-0 record in CYO competition, he added.

During the state title game, player Nick Becker scored 15 points and Joseph Castaldo added 14 points to lead St.Gregory´s to a 41-27 victory over Immaculate Conception of Tuckahoe at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx, O'Grady said.

The team roster included Joseph Castaldo, Ryan Maltbie, Ryan Jackson, Jake Harold, Nick Becker, Ryan Sidoti, Michael Rooney, Joseph Savignano, Matthew Bertolino, and Sean Radwan.

The head coach was Thomas Jackson assisted by Hugh Harold and Kevin Kelly.

The Archdiocesan tournament includes over 6,000 participants competing over six months from 10 counties including Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, Westchester, Putnam, Staten Island, Bronx, Manhattan, Dutchess, and Ulster.
