According to the unofficial results from the school district, 2,121 votes were in favor of the proposed budget and 1,809 were opposed. Only six percent of the district's 58,000 registered voters cast ballots.
The $231.6 million budget, which includes a 1.48 percent tax increase, or about $120 annually for the average household, will be used in part to increase summer programs and the arts, as well as for special education and add to support services at district schools.
“On behalf of all the children of the East Ramapo School District, I am heartened to see another passage of our school budget," said Board of Education President Yehuda Weissmandl in a statement. "The past two years have been a tribute to the willingness of all communities to come together for the benefit of those in our classrooms. Challenges brought collaboration, dedication, and a successful outcome."
The budget did not include money for busing private school students on district holidays, which was included in the original budget that failed during the May 16 election.
Weissmandl said that the district will immediately start to work on next year’s budget, which will include "serious conversations about transportation needs.”
