Blauvelt, Pearl River Students Nominated For Service Academies

Some of Rockland's best and brightest could soon be serving our country.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) honored the 12 Rockland students she nominated for admission to the nation's service academies- U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy.

“These exceptional young Americans are the future leaders of our great nation,” said Lowey. “Their outstanding applications reflect a deep commitment to public service and to improving their communities. It is an honor to work with our local veterans to identify and nominate such accomplished young people to represent the Lower Hudson Valley at our nation’s service academies.”

Six students from the Lower Hudson Valley have already been accepted.

The students are:

Austin Skywark, a Blauvelt resident, and Tappan Zee High senior nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy

Matthew McGovern, a Congers resident, and senior at Don Bosco, nominated to West Point

Kyran Christophersen, a Nanuet resident who attends SUNY Maritime, nominated to the Air Force

Brian Huang, a New City resident and senior at Clarkstown High School South, nominated to the Naval Academy

- Benjamin Lockey, a New City resident and senior at Clarkstown High School South, nominated to West Point.

- Conor McCabe, a Pearl River resident and senior at St. Joseph’s Regional School, nominated to the Naval Academy and Merchant Marine Academy

- Michael O’Meara, a Pearl River resident and senior at Nanuet Senior High School, nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy

- Daniel Hernandez, a Spring Valley resident and student at US Military Academy Preparatory School, nominated to West Point.

- Kevin Mesones, a Spring Valley resident and student at Rockland Community College, nominated to the United States Air Force Academy

- Patrick Fenton, a Stony Point resident and senior at North Rockland High School, nominated to the Air Force Academy

- Brian Nicpon, a Suffern resident and senior at Suffern High School, nominated to the Naval Academy

- Patrick Saavedra, a West Haverstraw resident and senior at North Rockland High School, nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy
