John Rose, 52, of West Haverstraw was arrested after he entered the apartment of a 43-year-old woman on Wood Avenue and threatened her with a hammer, police said. He then began choking her and hit her in the face and head with an unknown object, as well as with his fists, said Lt. Daniel Hylas.

During the attack Rose, who has known the victim for a long time,  also smashed the woman's computer with a hammer and attacked a 35-year-old man who was at the apartment, throwing a rock at him and then hitting him, causing a hip injury, Hylas said.

The woman had a protective order against Rose through the courts, Hylas added.

Rose was charged with assault, strangulation, criminal contempt, criminal obstruction of breathing, menacing with a weapon, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief.

He is being held on $2,500 bail at the  Rockland County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, April 28.
