Motioning as if he had a gun, the robber told the clerk at the Franklin Turnpike convenience store near the Suffern border around 12:20 a.m. Sunday that he "would kill him if he didn't give him the money from the register," Police Chief James N. Batelli told Daily Voice.

"The clerk told him he didn't have access to the register and the gunman then demanded his wallet," the chief said.

The robber fled with cash the clerk gave him from his wallet and the cigarettes, Batelli said.

Police and a township K-9 team searched the area with negative results, he said.

"A review of surveillance video from inside and outside the store leads investigators to believe he may have been driven to the store by an accomplice," Batelli said.

Anyone who saw anything or has information that could help the investigation is aked to contact Detective Eric Larsen at (201) 529-1000 or tips@mahwahpd.org.
