Police were dispatched to a local residence on Sunday, July 16, where there were reports of a man that was threatening others with a knife.

Upon arrival, police reported that when officers entered the home, they found a 36-year-old man in the kitchen holding a large knife. After ignoring several orders by officers to drop the weapon, police were forced to use tasers to bring the man - whose name has not been disclosed - down.

“Patrol officers have various force options when faced with violent subjects. In this case, officers elected to use a conducted electrical weapon in an attempt to bring a dangerous person under control without anyone else sustaining an injury,” police noted.

After being tased, police said they still had to physically remove the knife from the man’s hands. Following the incident, the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment and a psychiatric evaluation, under the New York State Mental Hygiene Law.

“In some cases, tasers may not be appropriate or effective,” police said. “It is extremely dangerous to deal with subjects in possession of edged weapons.”
