ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- Orangetown police have arrested a 22-year-old resident of Pomona on a DWI charge after he allegedly drove his vehicle into a taxicab and fled following the incident, police said.

An Orangetown police officer saw a vehicle sideswipe a taxi on Main Street in Nyack about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, then drive away, police report.

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle; the driver, identified as Timothy Mekhlin, had the odor of alcoholic on his breath and failed numerous sobriety tests at the scene, according to police.

Mekhlin was arrested for suspicion of DWI and transported to Orangetown police headquarters, where he failed a breath test, officials report.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an accident, a violation, according to police.

The defendant was released and is due back in Nyack Justice Court on Tuesday, April 26, to answer the charges, officials report.
