The Orangetown Police Department received reports of a man asleep behind the wheel of his running car on Erie Street at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17

Upon arrival, officers reported that they found 33-year-old Spring Valley resident Exantus Convington asleep, with the engine still running. After waking Covington up, they noticed the smell of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and stated he had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

After being arrested for drinking and driving, police transported Covington to police headquarters, where a breathalyzer showed that he had a blood alcohol content more than double the legal limit. Covington was subsequently charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Convington was released on bail and is due back in Orangetown Justice Court on Sept. 26 to answer the charges.
