Shaz, a black lab, and Holder, the department's first-ever bloodhound, will demonstrate their skills during a special ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the main Sheriff Building on New Hempstead Road.
Falco will also present plaques for deceased veteran K9 unit dogs Scooter and Gunner, both yellow labs, Chief William Barbera said.
Shaz (Shield #461), who was purchased through Connecticut K9 Services and trained at the Westchester County Police Department, will handle drug detection with Sgt. Dave Lowe.
Holder (#605), who was donated by the National Police Bloodhound Association, will be a tracking K9 with Officer Matt Myers.
"For the first time, the Sheriff’s Corrections Division will have a full time drug detection dog assigned to the inside of the facility," Barbera said.
"Gunner and Scooter both passed away recently," the chief said. "Gunner was with the bomb unit and scooter was an arson dog."
