At approximately 1:40 p.m. Friday, Ramapo Police responded to a call of an assault in progress.

While responding to the scene officers were advised that Chaverim, a community watch organization, were holding a suspect on the scene.

Upon arrival, Ramapo PD officers apprehended Hayler Ruiz-Alejo.

An investigation determined that Ruiz-Alejo entered the backyard of the Ronald Drive residence.

He then approached the elderly woman from behind and forcefully grabbed her around the head and neck area, police said.

Ruiz-Alejo proceeded to drag the female away, towards the corner of the property until the victim’s screams alerted two Chaverim members who then intervened, according to police.

Ruiz-Alejo attempted to flee the scene on foot but was detained by the Chaverim members until Ramapo Police arrived on scene.

Detectives from the Ramapo Police Department as well as the Rockland Co Sheriff’s Evidence Collection Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Ruiz-Alejo is currently being held at the Ramapo Police Department on charges of attempted robbery in the second degree, assault in the second degree, criminal trespass and DWI. Other charges are still pending, police said.
