BLAUVELT, N.Y. -- A structure fire on Bradley Hill Road has resulted in the death of a dog.

Orangetown Police responded to a the fire on Saturday at approximately 1:48 p.m., according to officials.

At the scene, officers found heavy smoke and flames coming out of a detached barn or garage that had been converted into an apartment, police report.

The homeowner was standing outside, and advised officers that no one else was inside the building except the owner's dog, police report.

Officers attempted entry into the building, but were unable to proceed past the doors due to heavy smoke, according to police.

The homeowner suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by medical personnel, but the homeowner’s dog perished in the fire, police report.

The fire was extinguished by the Blauvelt, Nyack and Central Nyack fire departments; the building was destroyed, but the fire departments were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the main house that was directly in front of the fire location, officials report.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Orangetown fire inspector, according to police.

The South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, Nyack Ambulance Corps, Rockland paramedics, Orangetown Police Detective Bureau and Orangetown building inspector assisted at the scene, officials report.
