Theresa M. Leone, 95, Of Nyack

NYACK, N.Y. -- Theresa M. Leone, of Nyack died Monday, Nov. 21. She was 95.

She was the first in her family born in America, March 30, 1921, in Nyack, to Joseph Leone and Mary Margaret Leone (Mahalic). 

She attended St. Ann’s School and graduated from Nyack High School with honors in 1939. She was a member of the first female class at Fordham University, where she received a degree in social studies and education. She went on to get a master’s degree in guidance and education at Fordham. Her career began at Congers High School. She taught briefly in Idaho, returning to New York to take a position at Sewanhaka High School on Long Island. She worked at Nyack High School from 1965-79. She started at Nyack as a guidance counselor and became chairwoman of of the department in January 1970. In her off time, she traveled the world, visiting China, Russia, Japan, Australia and many countries in Europe.

She is survived by her sister, Marie Voorhis. 

She was predeceased by her brother, Anthony J. (Bill) Leone.

Visiting hours will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Hanneman’s Funeral Home, 88 S. Broadway, Nyack. There will be a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann’s Church, 16 Jefferson St., Nyack.
