Lawrence V. Smith, 94, Of Pearl River

PEARL RIVER, N.Y. – Lawrence V. Smith, a lifelong resident of Pearl River, died Monday, Feb. 29. He was 94.

He was a lifelong, and perhaps the oldest living resident of Pearl River. He played varsity football and baseball at Pearl River High School, graduating in 1939.

Smith served with the Navy during World War II in Portugal and Brazil. After discharge from the military, he worked as a housing contractor while attending the Packard Business College in New York City on the GI bill. He later joined his brother Ed as a partner in Edward J. Smith Jr. Insurance Agency in Pearl River. He retired in 1993 and then served as an active member of the archivists of the Pearl River School system’s history.

He is survived by his children, Raymond P. Smith and his wife JoAnn of Albany; Kathleen Godfrey and her husband Thomas of Lancaster; and Daniel G. Smith of Pearl River. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jennie Smith Robbins and her husband Seth of McAllen; Elizabeth Smith Schwandt and her husband James of Los Angeles; Brian Godfrey of Los Angeles; Matthew Smith of Berkeley; Lindsey Smith Brown and her husband Alex of Denver; Calvin Godfrey of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Samuel Godfrey of Lancaster; Sean Smith of Pearl River; two great-grand children Rae-Marie Schwandt and Owen Brown; and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Gerard, Raymond, Edward Jr., Stanley and Richard.

Funeral mass is at St. Margaret of Antioch Church in Pearl River on Saturday, March 5, at 10 a.m.
