UPPER NYACK, N.Y. — Upper Nyack resident Isabel V. Wortendyke died Tuesday, May 3. She was 95.
A New York native, Wortendyke served as a volunteer in Panama during World War II, was a master gardener and wrote books for children with developmental challenges.
She began the first preschool for children at the YMCA in Nyack and worked in market research for BSI Global Marketing.
Wortendyke was a member of St. Ann’s Church; the Monday Morning Music Club; the Garden Club of Nyack; Daughters of the American Revolution; the Thursday Reading Club; and was very dedicated to Our Ladies of Charity.
She is survived by her children, Carl and his wife Patricia; John and his wife Denise; Martin and his wife Elizabeth; Peter and his wife MaryAnn; Mary and her husband Robert; and Janet.
Wortendyke also is survived by her grandchildren, Jason Christopher, Justin, Krista, Tori, Benjamin, Daniel, David, Christina, Annie and Alexandra and her great-grandchildren Evelyn, Leonore, Alexander, Layla, John and Sora.
She was predeceased by her husband John Jacob Wortendyke; a daughter Anne, a sister Emmakate; and her parents, Carl Gustav and Emmakate (Amorous) Vretman.
Visitation will be Friday, May 13, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc., 728 West Nyack Road, West Nyack. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, 16 Jefferson St., Nyack.
