The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department received a call shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, from a hiker reporting that she was part of a four-person group that was lost in the woods on the side of a cliff.

Police said the caller reported that they were unsure of their specific location and were unable to move on their own. First responders eventually tracked the group and located them near the Lamont Doherty Observatory in a precarious spot.

The officers made verbal contact with the hikers by accessing the cliff through Lawrence Lane, though responding officers were unable to reach them due to the steep terrain of the cliff.

Marine units from the PIP Police Department, Westchester County Police and Rockland County Sheriff’s Office were each dispatched to the scene and crews were able to eventually hike in and reached the hikers by rappelling down, bringing them to safety.

Following their rescue, police and the hikers were checked by paramedics for cold weather exposure, though all refused medical aid. The scene was eventually cleared at approximately 12:30 a.m. the following morning. No injuries were reported. The entire rescue took an estimated six hours.
