The escalating numbers are part of a nationwide health crisis -- opioid addiction, including heroin, fentanyl, and similar drugs. For young people, drug overdoses are the leading cause of death among people under the age of 50, and across the country the leading cause of accidental deaths.
But one local organization, Rockland Connects, wants to make sure the crisis is not reduced to statistics; and, instead, uplift the memories of the brothers, mothers, daughters, and uncles lost.
"It is imperative that, as a community, we support one another and create spaces for empowerment, reflection, and action," the organization said.
To remember those lost, the organization will host a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. July 20 at Nyack Memorial Park. All Rockland residents are invited to attend.
The event will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a few words from invited guest speakers. Members of the community will be welcomed to say a few words on behalf of their loved ones. Candles will be supplied.
