NYACK, N.Y. -- The desire for locals in Nyack and the surrounding communities to have a ferry service into New York City has resurfaced.

A petition is circulating among locals in Nyack and the surrounding towns calling for a ferry service between Tarrytown and Manhattan, and it has 324 signers,  according to moveon.org .

Four hundred signatures are needed, said the report.

"Rockland County is the second-highest taxed county in the nation, and yet we have practically no mass transit options into New York City," the petition says, according to moveon.org. "Our current real estate values do not keep pace with Westchester, and are not in sync with the taxes we pay."

Support for a Tarrytown-Manhattan ferry service has gone on for decades.

A letter to the editor in The New York Times from 20 years ago addressed opposition to the service.

"Opposition to a ferry project is being expressed by a small group of vocal residents, most of whom live near the proposed ferry site in a neighborhood that has already been gentrified," the letter said, according to The New York Times.

It garnered 400 signatures requesting a study for a ferry project, said the letter.

"A Nyack ferry would get 5 percent to 9 percent of Rockland County's Manhattan-bound commuters out of their cars, according to initial estimates, with a majority coming from Nyack," said The New York Times letter.

The writer also said if the project had success there would be other "ferry links" inspired by it, and traffic would be reduced in the region.
