More Than Just A Tummy Ache: Wyckoff Rallies For 8th Grader With Cancer

WYCKOFF, N.J. — What started as a series of stomach aches turned out to be cancer for a Wyckoff eighth grader, who had to miss her first day of school for a visit to the hospital.

It started over the summer for Payton Sargenti. She woke up one day with an excruciating stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix.

That's not where it ended for Payton.

She remained in the hospital for five days, missing her first day of school, and doctors found a tear in her small intestines. Payton remained positive as she was transferred to  Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was diagnosed with lymphoma in her small intestines.

It's a curable form of cancer that requires six months of chemotherapy, but will require homeschooling for Payton — described by friends as a social butterfly.

The community has raised nearly $46,000 on a GoFundMe for Payton. Click here to donate.
