ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Children with bunnies and hamsters, busy families with cats, dogs, birds and reptiles, and older people with pets represent the majority of clients mobile veterinarian Rockland County based Dr. Molly Herdic serves.

Herdic, known by her clients in Rockland and Westchester counties, and Bergen County, N.J., as Dr. Molly, strictly makes house calls through her new practice, Home Vet Visits.

She is carving a niche among her clientele who need a vet that makes house calls, Herdic said.

"People tell me they love to have me come over because they don't have to get their animal into the car, or their cats or exotic pets into the carrier, their pet doesn't arrive stressed to the hospital and have to wait with other stressed animals," she said. "They appreciate my gentle care and feel their pets are more relaxed at home."

Her home visits range from the ordinary to unusual.

"I trimmed the wing feathers on a few ducks who were gaining flight and almost clearing the fence. A snake who had skin that was not properly shedding off. A bird with an egg which would not come out. A dog who had his ear bitten through to the other side," she said.

Herdic provides wellness visits; vaccines and testing on healthy patients, dermatology cases, minor cat fight/dog fight wounds, urination abnormalities, general care for geriatric patients, euthanasia and home hospice care, sick birds, reptiles, small mammals, gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats.

Animals that present with with critical illness will be referred to a local animal hospital for x-rays, hospitalization or surgery, she said.

Herdic attended Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine and Union College in New York. She worked as a mixed animal practitioner (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, cats and dogs) before training in avian and exotic animal medicine, she said.

For the majority of her 21-year career, she worked in animal hospitals.

Additionally, Herdic owned and operated Dr. Molly's Avian/Exotic and House Call Practice for eight years in Fredericksburg, Va.

She opened Home Vet Visits in early 2016.
