Nyack Pastry Chef Didier Dumas Set To Expand Bakery

NYACK, N.Y. -- Snagging a table on a sunny Sunday morning at French patisserie Didier Dumas is about to get easier.

The French baker is breaking down a wall and building 500-square-feet of interior space where the outdoor patio is now located. A small portion of the patio will be salvaged.

The expansion will disrupt the bakery for two to three days in late October, and the renovation is expected to last three months - just in time for the holidays.

The purveyor of perfect pastries knows building renovation often takes longer than expected. Didier Dumas's shop closed in July 2014 after a lightening strike on an upper floor apartment caused a building fire.

Loyalists from near and far were at a loss without his buttery croissants, mini tartlets, crepes, and macaroons. It took eight months to reopen. Didier was frustrated by the stop-and-go renovations. He kept anxious patrons in the loop on his Facebook page, and when he bumped into them at the market.

Didier is expanding because, at times, it's standing room only, especially when bands of bikers stream through on weekends.

During his hiatus, Didier spent time in his native Marseille, and in Paris taking cooking lessons. After fairly consistent offering for years, he's planning on broadening his fare to include salads and savory dishes, as well as selling wine by the glass.

The new shop will also have handicapped-accessible toilets.
