That's a question Joe Printz, owner of the Grape D'Vine and D'Vine Bar in Sparkill, gets a lot. Especially because, as he said, "Thanksgiving is the number one wine drinking holiday in America followed by Easter and Christmas."

Folks may buy more wine at Christmas, -- it makes for a great gift, he explained, but in terms of drinking, most wine is consumed at the Thanksgiving day table.

And so, with the turkey being a "cacophony of flavors going on at once," you need a wine that conquers all.

His recommendations:

  • A rich Chardonnay from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages.
  • Rieslings are all good because they are well made and the acid and sugar balances are so pronounced. "You can go deeper into the years and vintages," said Printz. "I like older Rieslings myself."
  • Other wine groups that work well are Pinot Noir (from 2012 or '13; he particularly likes the Oregon vintages), Red Zinfandel and Rhone-style wines (from 2011 and 2012).
  • Zinfindels, he said, are a matter of personal taste; he prefers them them a little fresher or younger, say between 2010 and 2013.
