Southbound BBQ, Chestnut Ridge
Cue the Beef: "Where friends go to meat" is the motto at this Southern-style eatery where communal tables encourage chatting --and checking out what your neighbor ordered. Expect lots of influences from the coastal plains of the Carolinas and Georgia, to the bayous of the Gulf Coast and the mountains and valleys of Appalachia. Bonus points for the fact that much of the food is tree-nut and peanut free. The restaurant also uses a rice flour to coat most of its fried dishes for those who are gluten-sensitive.
That in no way means cutting down on taste -- there's lots of interesting Southern-inspired barbecue on the menu including St. Louis Cut Wild Boar Ribs, Alligator Andouille Sausage, Beer Can Chicken, and a Bayou Boil Bag (shrimp, crawfish, corn and red bliss potatoes in a spicy broth). Not to mention an assortment of housemade sauces to pour on the heat. You can also create your own "meatopia" -- think pulled pork, smoked brisket, and beer can chicken.
