NYACK, N.Y. -- Residents who have diabetes will want to visit Nyack Hospital when they host a free symposium on diabetes on Tuesday, March 22 in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association’s “Diabetes Alert Day.”

The free event, which is open to the public, will be held in the Krutz Auditorium at Nyack Hospital from 6-8:30 p.m.

Presentations will include a “Diabetes Update” from Dr. Alan Dresner, Nyack Hospital chief of endocrinology, and “Diabetes and Obstructive Sleep Apnea” by Lauren Johnson, clinical education specialist from Persante.

American Diabetes Association Alert Day is a one-day "wake-up call" asking the public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Risk Test asks users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes.

Preventive tips are provided for everyone who takes the test, including encouraging those at high risk to talk with their health care provider. Although Alert Day is a one-day event, the Diabetes Risk Test is available year-round.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 29 million children and adults have diabetes in the United States, and another 86 million adults have pre-diabetes, which puts them at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. It is the most common form of diabetes and a number of risk factors can contribute to a person’s likelihood of developing the disease. Risk factors include age, weight, diet and activity level. African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and people who have a family history of the disease are also at increased risk.

Pre-registration is recommended by calling 845-348-2004. Walk-ins are welcome.
