“Understanding and Responding to Dementia-related Behavior,” is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 at Meals on Wheels, 121 W. Nyack Road, Nanuet, according to a statement from the Alzheimer's Association.

On Dec. 20, the group is to offer a “Virtual Dementia Tour” in 30-minute sessions from 5 – 8 p.m. at Meals on Wheels, the Alzheimer’s Association said.

The first event, which includes a complimentary lunch, aims to provide information about how to communicate with people affected by dementia-related conditions and will offer tips on how to decode behavioral and verbal messages delivered by such people, organizers said.

The program is also to offer strategies on how to connect and communicate with people during every stage of the disease.

The “Virtual Dementia Tour” is geared toward caregivers, according to organizers, who said that the program simulates dementia symptoms to prepare caregivers to cope with the behaviors when they arise.

Both programs are being partially funded by grants from the New York State Department of Health, organizers said.
