Sonia Cairo is the Executive Director at Keep Rockland Beautiful, a not-for- profit organization that leads efforts to clean up, beautify and protect Rockland County’s environment by implementing programs that educate and empower people to share in the care and stewardship of our communities. Keep Rockland Beautiful’s annual Fall Waterways and Great American Cleanup campaigns engage over 3,000 volunteers throughout the county in removing more than 40 tons of trash and pollutants from streets, parks, and waterways. At the same time, these campaigns raise environmental awareness and foster stewardship, teaching participants about the benefits of recycling, the impacts of runoff and ways to protect our watershed. Keep Rockland Beautiful’s Environmental Education Programs for Youth: Earth B.E.A.T. (Basic Environmental Awareness Training) for grades K-8 and Rockland P.L.U.S. (Planning Land Use with Students) for grades 10-12- have educated thousands of children, youth, parents and teachers, on local ecology, waste reduction and recycling, water and energy conservation, and sustainable development.Ms. Cairo has been the organization’s Executive Director since 2012, and continues to lead the development and implementation of its Environmental Education Programs for Youth. Ms. Cairo is a NYS licensed high school social studies teacher and has an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University.
